An advanced novel solvent for CO2 post-combustion capture application

Aqueous amines are considered the most mature technological option for CO
₂
removal from power plants flue gas. This work focuses on the characterization and evaluation of a blend of piperazine (PZ) with aqueous sterically-hindered amine 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP). This blend has been evaluated and confirmed to be a promising solvent for CO
₂
removal in gas streams. This evaluation considered the CO
₂
absorption capacity, the heat of absorption (reaction enthalpy), heat capacity and reaction kinetics of the blend at a concentration of 10/20 wt.% (AMP/PZ). The solvent screening set-up (SSS) (Fig. 1) was used to determine the absorption capacity of CO
₂
at 313.15 °K. Micro-reaction calorimeter (Fig. 2) was used to measure the heat of absorption at 313.15 °K and heat capacity at the temperature range of 303.15-353.15 °K. The stopped-flow technique (Fig. 3) was used to measure the direct pseudo first-order reaction kinetics of the blend at 313.15 °K. The absorption capacity was found to be 0.99 mol
_CO2
/mol
_amine
, the reaction enthalpy and specific heat were found to be 93.4 kJ/mol CO
₂
and 4.05 J/g·°C, respectively.
