Properties of the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation and the Kirchoff plate equation related to controllability

Summary form only given. A discussion is presented of the propagation of singularities, uniqueness questions, and other properties of the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation and the Kirchoff plate equation. A result previously obtained by the author (1985), which essentially gave an explicit solution to the boundary control problem for the plate equation u/sub tt/+ Delta /sup 2/u=0, is expanded upon to give a representation formula for a solution in a cylinder in terms of the Cauchy data on the lateral boundary. The relationship of the results to questions of controllability is examined.<
