Normal gastric emptying reflects a coordinated effort between different regions of the stomach as well as extrinsic modulation by central nervous system (CNS). Gastric dysmotility includes delayed gastric emptying, and other motor dysfunctions such as impaired fundic distention. In all drug trials of Prokinetic Agents, the correlation between symptom improvement and acceleration of gastric emptying has been poor. Moreover, there are a lot of side effects as charted by the FDA. In individuals with symptoms of gastro paresis who have normal rates of gastric emptying, other motor, myoelectric, or sensory abnormalities may elicit symptoms. In such investigations, individuals report symptoms consistent with upper gastrointestinal dysmotility such as regular nausea and vomiting. In the 1990s gastric electrical stimulation (GES) was introduced for treatment of periodic nausea and vomiting. The electrodes and neurostimulator are usually placed with general open surgery, later on improved to Laparoscopy placements and research goes on to place the electrodes through endoscopy. This project aims to develop a simple method to deliver the gastric stimulation with the gastric electrodes in-built with a camera for guidance to get feasible through the esophagus, reach the stomach and stimulate the Interstitial Cajal Cells. In order that right amount of stimulation at the correct rate depending on the patient's condition is delivered, a continuous real time EGG monitoring is performed. The gastric activity is improved by adjusting the voltage and ON-OFF intervals of the stimulator. The other method proposed is waist belt technique. An external belt with tubes which delivers waves of adjustable range in an attempt to restore the normal cycle. This is the first project proposed to develop a temporary gastric stimulator to treat early symptoms of gastric motility disorders with minimal cost, no bed-stay, and zero side effects while compared to the existing treatments of gastric motility disorders till date which are either painful with side effects or requires frequent hospital stay.
