Optimization and performance analysis of E-core and C-core flux-switching permanent-magnet machines for electric vehicle applications

Flux-switching permanent-magnet (FSPM) machine demonstrates advantages of high power density, easy heat dissipation ability, strong flux-weakening capability and mechanical robustness due to its unique configuration and working principle, which shows its great attraction for electric vehicle (EV) applications. In this paper, design and optimization of novel E- and C-core FSPM machines for EVs, which can provide higher torque density than conventional FSPM machines and meanwhile reduce magnet usage obviously, are developed firstly. Comparison of the key performance, such as torque capability and magnet usage, is also made among these two new-type and conventional FSPM machines by finite element algorithm (FEA). Besides, comprehensive simulations are provided to verify relevant theoretical investigations.
