A 622 Mbit/s transmitter for POF-based home networks using red LED

A high-speed 650 nm resonant-cavity light-emitting diode (RC-LED)-based transmitter for polymer optical fiber (POF) communication systems using on-off keying (OOK) non-return-to-zero (NRZ) modulation is presented. The proposed transmitter is based on a differentiator circuit with an inserted threshold voltage to enhance peaking and carrier sweep-out effects. The system achieves error-free data transmissions at the rate of 622 Mbit/s over 20 m step-index POF (SI-POF) and 30 m graded-index POF (GI-POF) using commercial RC-LED and silicon pin photodiode (PD).
