Tunable graphene FSS for terahertz applications

In this paper, a new type of tunable frequency selective surface (FSS) based on single layer graphene for terahertz (THz) applications is proposed. To apply the gate voltage, a metal wire-array is designed. A broad tunable band of 0.68-1.42 THz is achieved by tuning the Fermi level and hence surface conductivity of the graphene layer. In addition, a modulation depth of 78% for reflectance and 70% for transmittance is also obtained in the band of 1.3-1.57 THz. The tunable graphene FSS can be readily applied into THz modulators.
