The characteristics of porous BDD electrode and its degradation of dye wastewater

As been the most promising electrode material, boron doped diamond film (BDD) exhibits several excellent electro-catalytic characteristics which are incomparable over the conventional electrodes, such as higher oxygen evolution potential, lower background current, higher physical and chemical stability, inert adsorption, etc. Dye wastewater is one of the typical hazardous industrial effluents with high concentration and poor biodegradability, the main organic components are aromatic hydrocarbons, heterocyclic compounds, chromogenic groups (such as-N=O,-N=N-, etc.) and polar groups (such as-OH, -SO
₃
Na, -NH
₂
, etc.). In this paper, BDD film was deposited using chemical vapor deposition method on porous metal Ti substrate, and the porous BDD electrode was prepared, its characteristics and degradation process of dye wastewater were discussed. Results show that the porous electrode demonstrates excellent electrochemical characteristics, exhibits self cleaning characteristics when the working potential is above oxygen evolution potential, and remains high current efficiency. In the process of oxidation degradation of dye wastewater, chromogenic groups can be broken firstly, the happening of bleaching reaction is easier than that of benzene ring-opening reaction. Further prolongs degradation time, wastewater can be mineralized completely into carbon dioxide and water.
