AP-S Turnstile: Is there anybody there?

Like the bemused traveler in Walter de la Mare's cele brated poem, we have been wondering for a long time if anyone else is out there in the universe. In a recent testimony before a House Committee on Science, Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI Institute [2], offered the following optimistic assessment [3]: It's unproven whether there is any life beyond Earth. I think that situation is going to change within everyone's lifetime in this room.
