Results of performance simulations of various ADSL configurations

This paper is concerned with ADSL systems operating in BT's local access network-exploiting the existing metallic wires which connect peoples' houses to telephone exchanges. We consider the performance consequences of various architectural options. Generally the options are to give more service, but require the transmission system to carry more payload-so the transmission system loses reach: enhanced service but to less of the population. We discuss the parameters of the simulations performed, and present numerical results from those simulations. We conclude that over 90% of telephone lines can support a 2 Mbit/s video on demand (VoD) offering, and the bandwidth used could be increased considerably over most of those.
