Recommended practice for installation, termination and testing of insulated power cable as used in the petroleum and chemical industry

A discussion of IEEE Standard P576 is given, as it applies to the actual practice of applying the stated recommendations to everyday cable installations. It has long been recognized that the majority of cable failures in the industry result from mechanical damage during installation. It is suggested that this standard be used to avoid improper design and installation procedures. IEEE Standard P576 gives allowable limits and procedures for pulling tension, sidewall pressure, bending radii, and other factors. The use of these procedures can provide a significant increase in the life expectancy of an insulated cable system. These practices should be considered at the engineering design phase as well as the installation phase of any project.<
