Modelling as a tool for analysing handling effects in structured wire cabling

This paper describes a modelling technique developed to determine the handling effects on the performance of a twisted pair cable working at high frequencies. The transmission line modelling (TLM) method is used. A formulation of the 1D TLM model for a non-uniform, lossy, twisted pair cable has been developed. The model is used to determine the step and pulse response of the cable under different handling conditions. The performance of both uniform and non-uniform cables are presented. The results show that the way cables are handled and the mechanism of production can effect the cable parameters and hence affect their time and frequency responses. The method presented allows the effects of individual factors to be analysed.
