Circle-mesh overlay for P2P-based RTCWeb conferencing system

Nowadays along with the appearance of Real-Time Communication in Web-browsers (RTCWeb) the demand for building an RTCWeb conferencing service (RWCS) arises. There are two approaches for conferencing services: client-server model and P2P model. The client-server model may cause a bottleneck problem at web server when there are many conferencing services running simultaneously. In this paper, we suggest applying P2P model in RWCS as a solution to avoid bottleneck point at web server. Recent overlay control mechanisms in P2P-based conferencing service existed many unnecessary re-negotiation procedures among participants when there was a participant joining or leaving the conference or there was the change in participants' bandwidth capabilities. RWCS needs to reduce or avoid these unnecessary negotiations to mitigate the delay at users' perspective in receiving media streams providing that the negotiation procedure between RTCWeb-compatible browsers causes a considerable delay. As the result, we design a new overlay control mechanism for P2P-based RWCS: Circle-Mesh overlay. The proposed overlay in coordination with dynamic multicast trees for distributing the media streams in the conference reduces the unnecessary negotiation procedures to maintain a good experience for users.
