There is more to typesetting than setting type

Some typographic conventions relating to line composition and page makeup are presented in the context of the problems they pose to the designer of a computer program for typographic composition. Although justification (setting lines of uniform length) is simply defined and the rules by which it is accomplished are generally agreed upon, design of a computer program to justify fines of type requires careful attention to a number of considerations. The rules of page makeup are not nearly so universally defined. The compositor who manually prepares pages from type relies on experience and esthetic judgment to solve each problem as it arises. In the computer all decisions likely to be required must be anticipated and solutions built in in advance.
