A Predictive Software Tool for Compatibility Assessment of Magnet Design Requirements and Power Converter Constraints Based on the Stored Magnetic Energy

The compatibility of a set of design requirements for a quadrupole electromagnet with a given pulsed power converter can be judged based on the stored magnetic energy, which depends on the magnetic length l

and on the aperture radius r. In this work, we combine existing analytical relations to describe these dependencies. A comparison of the obtained analytical description with a set of two-dimensional magnet designs confirms that the stored magnetic energy of a non-saturated quadrupole electromagnet scales with l

. With this result, we develop a new visual tool to quickly assess the compatibility between a set of design requirements for a quadrupole electromagnet and the operation range of a given power converter specified as the output current as a function of the inductance load.
