Operational impacts on VRLA life

The changing requirements of battery applications has resulted in the adoption of a newly developed battery technology-valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries. VRLA batteries have some unique characteristics that make them more suitable for the new marketplace. This new technology and its deployment in abusive environments requires an adaptation in knowledge of how batteries are installed, operated and maintained. In this paper, the focus is on the effects these environments have on VRLA batteries and how to maximize battery life through the best possible practices. Specifically, the three areas where the user can most significantly impact battery life are: thermal management; charging management; and installation and use maintenance management.
