is accurately known. So far as the author is aware, no attempt at a complete analysis of the subject has been made heretofore. The object of this paper is to develop a method by which the synchronizing power P

may be calculated fairly accurately under any condition likely to be met with. The method applies only to synchronous machines of the usual definite pole construction. Blondel's conception of two reactions with some modifications and extensions is followed generally throughout the paper.
