The informal structure of project organizations

Project management is a process of completing a one time activity with a set of well defined end results described by scope, quality, time and cost, with and through the actions of others. To achieve project end results, an efficient and effective project organization structure that facilitates communication flows and cooperation among internal employees and with external stakeholders is necessary. This paper describes the whole process of selecting the right project leadership using Krackhardt and Hanson's mapping technique of employees' informal relationships. The paper elaborates the mapping results of networks in matrix formats. It is illustrated by the same case study used by Krackhardt and Hanson. This shows how to best select the project manager based on all employees input, not by one CEO's personal assumption and observation.
