Constraining the energy gobbler: Industry is the principal energy consumer; technology exists to save fuel and, of course, dollars

That U.S. industry has been selected as the prime target for energy conservation is not mere chance. As the largest energy-consuming sector in the nation, industry gulps some 40 percent of the total fuel used each year. However, it is estimated that up to about 20 percent of that amount could be saved through the use of innovative technologies (Fig. 1) that should result in dollar as well as fuel economies.
