Feedback from IEEE's long-range planning report: While the report may have largely failed as a blueprint for change, it has confirmed the Institute's need for advance planning

“Long Range Plans,” an ambitious report written by IEEE's Long Range Planning Committee over a three-year period from 1973 to 1975 and described in last month's Spectrum (p. 60), has been under attack ever since its release a little more than a year ago. Every major Institute Board, each of which circulated the Long Range Planning Committee report among its volunteer officers, has critiqued the report from its own viewpoint and expressed serious reservations about its contents. In addition, many IEEE officers, and former officers, have expressed to Spectrum, on and off the record, their belief that the report is seriously deficient in a number of respects.
