Expert systems: The structure, history, and future of successful AI applications

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a term much in vogue these days. AI can be loosely defined as the study of intelligence using the ideas and methods of computation. There are two fundamental issues in AI research: the manner in which knowledge is represented within a computer system and the way in which that knowledge is processed. These two concepts are central to the notion of an expert system.
