The correlation dimension in CA1: a promising measure of theta rhythm maturation

Since one of the goals of our lab is the identification of new quantitative measures of normal brain function, this paper presents the preliminary results obtained using the attractor and the correlation dimension (an indicator of randomness) on EEG from CA1, a subfield of the hippocampus responsible for the generation of theta rhythm. Data were collected from 15, 30, and 90 days old rats during REM sleep. Embedding dimension and correlation dimension were generated for each animal using the Grassberger-Procaccia algorithm. Results show an increase in correlation dimension in CA1 EEG as the rat matures.
