Whatever happened to analog computers?

Though digital computers have been increasingly dominant throughout the past 30 years, it has seemed there would always be a place for analog computers. Their real-time processing capability was indispensable 20 years ago for the simulation of various systems, particularly in the military and aerospace fields. It seemed inconceivable that the analog computer's skills could ever be approached, let alone surpassed, by the digital kind.
