SMART model: a tool for performance evaluation

The SMART (System Modeling Analysis and Research Tool) model is a tool to support the performance evaluation process. It was determined that it was necessary to have a tool that could predict the performance impact, on the system level, of various hardware and software changes, additions, or enhancements. Therefore, an effort was undertaken to create a system model of the PC Server environment. The SMART model is the result of this effort. The initial version of the SMART model was a simulation model of a PS/2* with a Direct Access Storage Device (DASD) subsystem running OS/2*. The purpose of this project was to create a tool that would predict the performance of various DASD subsystems on PS/2 platforms. The SMART model was developed to achieve this purpose. To ensure that the model depicted actual hardware and software the debugged model was validated against measurements taken on a PS/2 system running OS/2.
