Perceived intensity of tool-transmitted vibration: Effects of amplitude and frequency

In this study, we measured the perceived intensity of vibrations in the hand for mechanically grounded objects. We conducted an absolute magnitude estimation experiment for two within-subject factors: the amplitude and the frequency of vibration. We revised the vibration generation method and the experimental design adopted in our previous study. As a result, the measured perceived intensity was precisely modeled as nonlinear functions based on Stevens' power law. The slope and exponent of the estimated power function decreased with frequency until 200 Hz. We also compared our experimental design and the perceived intensity model with those of related studies. Our results can be utilized for effective information transfer of vibration in handle type devices.
