Progress toward a metal-base transistor

Many advances in materials technology have contributed to the speed of present silicon transistors. Over the years these advances have led to dramatic reductions in the two critical dimensions that determine the speed of a bipolar transistor: the width of the stripe-shaped emitter and the thickness of the base.
