Coming: 12600 megawatts at Itaipu Island

Itaipu Island is small but many things on it are big. “Singing rock” - the meaning of the Guarani Indian word “itaipu” - is getting ready to put into operation before the end of the year the first generator in the world's largest hydroelectric power-generating station. The plant, located in the Parana River at the common border of Brazil and Paraguay [Fig. 1] and owned jointly by the two countries, will serve industrialized regions in the south and southeast of Brazil and all of Paraguay.
