I. U.S. and Canada: Initial results reported

Limited operation of commercial optical-waveguide communication links in the United States and Canada has turned up at least one unexpected result: Some subscribers were unnerved when they used the links. The lack of electrical noise in the circuit seemed to confuse them. An optical system, of course, eliminates several sources of noise, yielding a circuit that is unusually quiet.
