Consumer electronics. Higher fi by digits: Digitally encoded audio disks and associated playback gear promise breakthrough in high fidelity, low noise

In the early 1980s, manufacturers will begin marketing systems that produce high fidelity sound from digitally encoded audio disks. The sound, as contrasted with that from analog audio disks, will have increased maximum dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and no tracking distortion, wow, flutter, pop or surface noise. Demonstration systems have been impressive, and the total lack of background noise of any kind during pauses in musical passages is particularly dramatic.
