The rapid advance of the quartz watch in the marketplace is far from leveling off. Of the approximately 280 million watches expected to be sold this year, an estimated 30 percent will be quartz, with the percentage increasing during the 1980s. While the liquid-crystal display (LCD) leads in quartz watch sales, the quartz analog watch is advancing from second place, and quartz watches that use light-emitting-diode (LED) displays are falling behind.
