The dramatic impact of the electronic integrated circuit upon virtually every kind of system has provided the justification for efforts directed at developing integrated optical circuits. Many of the same system benefits are expected to be realized for a variety of signal-processing and sensor functions - for example, reduced equipment size, weight, and ultimately, cost.
