In cellular telephone, complexity works

The composition and operation of cellular telephone systems are described. The problems experienced by mobile, automobile-based receivers are discussed. Frequency reuse, which is what provides the high capacity of cellular systems, is examined. A unique feature of the cellular system, the handoff concept, whereby the system can take an ongoing call on one channel and hand it off to another channel when the mobile unit leaves a cell and enters a new one, is discussed. The factors that determine cell size are explained. Requirements for receiving with portable units are considered.<
