An analysis of the wind energy sector in Romania

The `20/20' plan represents European Union (EU) response strategy to the global concern with CO₂ emission reduction. The EU decided that by year 2020 the renewable energy to account for 20% of its energy portfolio. Consequently, as a newly integrated EU state member, Romania had to adopt its own national strategy regarding the energy portfolio diversification and increase in the renewable energy share. In this respect, as of year 2020, Romania agreed that 38% of its total energy produced to come from renewable sources other than large hydropower plants [12]. Although regarded as a country with a high wind potential, the Romanian wind energy sector is yet to reach its potential. The challenges identified involve both technical and administrative aspects. The paper aims, through ascertaining the state of the wind energy sector, to identify the current barriers and to suggest a number of measures to support the development of wind energy sector in Romania.
