Optimal floating-point structures for low roundoff noise digital filters

A theoretical analysis of roundoff noise power in floating-point realizations of digital filters is presented. Formulas are given for single-length and double-length accumulators. The minimal-noise floating-point structure is found to be identical to the minimal-noise fixed-point structure.
