Production of 10–100 megabar pressures by nanosecond megaampere generators

In this work, experiments have been performed on the MIG generator with a water transforming line on exit (the impedance 0.65-0.34 Ω, the peak pulse power 1.5 TW) to explore the possibilities of producing multimegabar pressures by electrodynamic implosion of condensed cylinders. The generator produces a current of 3-3.5 MA with a risetime of ~70 ns at an inductive load L~15 nH. Preliminary experiments with different conductors (rods or metal tubes filled with polyethylene) of diameter 0.8-2.7 mm and length 0.6-1.0 cm at a current of up to 3.2 MA and a risetime of ~70 ns have demonstrated the possibility of compressing the matter. The experimental estimate of the energy deposition into the load is several kilojoules per unit conductor length that agrees with results of calculations by the one-dimension MHD program. It has been shown that the use of Ø~1-mm conductors as a load makes it possible to attain pressures of tens of megabars in them.
