Research on temperature characteristic of giant magnetostrictive actuator

The emphasis of this paper is to research the temperature characteristic of giant magnetostrictive actuator (GMA). First, a prototype of GMA driving by a Φ5×40mm GMM rod (Terfenol-D) is made and the experimental test-bench is set. Then, finite element method is adopted for analyzing and optimizing the temperature rise of GMA, and the influence of driving current frequency on temperature change in GMA is summarized. At last, thermal expansion coefficient and output strain of GMA is measured, the value and hysteresis of the strain under differ temperature is tested. The results show that thermal expansion coefficient is about 12ppm/°C, and magnetostrictive coefficient has a negative relation with temperature. The temperature rise will reduce the value, but enhance the hysteresis of the strain.
