On the syllable structures of Chinese relating to speech recognition

It is well known that Chinese is a tone language with a multi tone system, but the distinctive syllable structures relating to speech recognition have not been brought to phoneticians' attention yet. The syllable structures and phonotactic rules are discussed and the joint probability of the initial and final syllables are given. A comparative study of the relative information transmitted by the position channel between Chinese and English shows that the syllable structures of Chinese have an advantage; they can increase the position recognition rate and syllable intelligibility. It is shown that perceiving a phoneme is based on the syllable in which it exits.
