High voltage shore connection

Ship's emission control rules that will soon come in force, encourage the implementation of high voltage shore connection (HVSC) also referred to as Cold Ironing or Alternate Marine Power (AMP). In most countries of the world HVSC requires the use of frequency converters to convert power frequency from 50 Hz on shore to 60 Hz onboard. Because of the high power factor and good quality of electric energy, the best choice is pulse width modulated (PWM) converter with active front end. Centralized system, with one or more frequency converters placed in a substation or building away from the quay is better solution than distributed topology with one frequency converter placed at each berth. Cable management system (CMS) should be placed ashore on movable platforms. So far, the greatest obstacles for wider use of HVSC are non existing global standards.
