Intelligent Physiological Monitoring and Feedback System for Driver Safety

In the course of driving, sudden disease outbreak often cause serious traffic accidents. If drivers can real-time understand their physiological state, and then they could have a chance to get the best solution at the first time. Maybe accidents will be largely reduced. Therefore, we developed a wearable real-time physiological monitoring and feedback system that consists of a small-size measuring module and a smart phone. The measuring module is designed to acquire the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal in the driver's earlobe and is implemented by a Programmable System on Chip (PSoC). The PPG data are transmitted to a smart phone via a Bluetooth. On the smart phone, we developed a program to process the signal and calculate the related physiological parameters such as heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), etc., and display the waveform and these physiological parameters on the screen. If the driver has abnormal physiological signals, this smart phone can real-time remind the driver through its vibration and sound. Furthermore, the related information and GPS coordinates are also be transmitted to a remote monitoring center and database via 3G mobile network. Therefore, the staff on remote center can know the driver's newest status and location. This system is helpful for drivers to get the best solution at the first time. The accuracy of HR detection is verified by comparing of the ECG signal.
