Synchrophasors and supporting infrastructure in New Zealand transmission grid

International developments in phasor applications have demonstrated the potential of using phasor measurements to enhance network visibility. Most of these operational experiences are primarily for a large transmission grid or for a network connected to one. The motivation of this panel paper is to share New Zealand's experience and thus, provide a contrasting insight of Phasor development infrastructure implemented in small island power grid. Since 2007, 10 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) have been installed in New Zealand, and presently, 3 new PMUs are being added each year. Applications like model validation, detection of ageing equipments and monitoring electromechanical oscillations have been successfully implemented.
