The challenge to design intelligent consumer and domestic product interfaces

At the Institute of Design, University of Teesside, a research programme has recently begun examining the ergonomics issues of advanced interfaces which include intelligent and adaptive interfaces for domestic and consumer products. One aim of the project is to develop simulations and prototypes of adaptive and intelligent interfaces and to conduct a series of user trials to establish consumer preferences, perceptions and behavioural patterns with these types of innovative interfaces. The findings of these studies will form part of a set of guidelines to assist designers in developing and specifying interfaces that users find acceptable and easy to use.
