MEMS scanner based handheld imaging guided Mohs surgery system

We demonstrate a handheld Mohs surgical probe coupling confocal imaging with projection for guided skin cancer removing. The probe consists of a miniaturized confocal microscope for in-vivo imaging, and a display system to track the real-time movement of tissue for the accurate determination of the projection area. Fast lissajous pattern laser scanning for confocal imaging was provided by a CMOS compatible 2-axis MEMS mirror. Lateral resolution of 6um with large field-of-view (FOV) of 1mm×0.5mm was achieved for the microscopic imaging at a speed of 2 frames-per-second (fps). Mosaic image with FOV of 4.8mm×6.2mm with high resolution demonstrates the system's functionality for surgeon to diagnose interested disease. The system's clinical imaging performance was further verified on histological human benign oral tissue, and compared with a commercial microscope. Effective projection performance was demonstrated with a close overlapping (over 87%) between the imaging & diagnosing area.
