Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped optical fibers: Fabrication and characteristics

A kind of single cladding highly Er
³⁺
/Yb
³⁺
co-doped silica optical fiber (EYDF) for optical communications is fabricated using the new MCVD process. A highly quality soot phosphosilicate layer is deposited and the high absorption fiber is fabricated by using the appropriate temperature and doping phosphorus technique. The absorption ratio of the single cladding EYDF is as high as 588.8 dB/m at 976 nm, which is much higher than that of Er
³⁺
doped fiber (EDF). The background loss is less than 0.1dB/m at 1200nm.
