A transient 2D model of an electrodynamic wheel moving above a conductive guideway

When a magnetic rotor is simultaneously rotated and translationally moved above an aluminum guideway a traveling time-varying magnetic field is created in the air-gap. This field induces eddy currents in the guideway that can simultaneously create suspension and propulsion or braking forces. The transient fields and the forces created by this moving rotor are modeled using a novel 2D analytic based A-φ method in which the presence of the rotor field is incorporated into the boundary conditions of the guideway. The solution is obtained by using the spatial Fourier transform and temporal Laplace transform. The performance of the method is compared with a previously presented 2D transient finite element model.
