Removal of mixed volatile organic compounds using bipolar pulsed DBD

The study on the decomposition of mixed volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has significance value for that the exhaust gas from manufactory is usually mixture of several kinds of VOCs. This experiment chose four kinds of VOCs (acetone, benzene, tetrachloroethylene and m-xylene) as the treatment objects to study the decomposition characteristics of mixed VOCs by the bipolar pulsed DBD (bipolar pulsed power introduced into dielectric barrier discharge reactor). The results indicated that the order of the removal efficiency of VOCs followed as m-xylene > tetrachloroethylene > benzene > acetone no matter treating single-compound or mixed VOCs. The decomposition characteristics of mixed components were different from that of single-compound because of the interaction effect in the mixture. Comparing with the result of treating single-compound, the removal efficiency of m-xylene only fell a little but the other three components fell a lot on the mixed VOCs treatment. In addition, when the capacitance of the pulse capacitor was at an appropriate range, more effective energy, higher level energetic electrons and active particles could be injected into the DBD reactor, which could enhance the removal efficiency and energy efficiency of the mixed VOCs.
