Back in 1911, the University of Western Australia (UWA) was established as the first free university in the British Empire, and it promoted access to education for all social classes while working to help develop Western Australia's burgeoning local economy. At the time, the local population was comprised of approximately 120,000 people who primarily worked in the agricultural, pastoral, and mining industries. In the 100 years since its birth, the university has produced over 100,000 graduates and has grown to conduct nearly 70% of the university-based research and development in Western Australia.
