Low threshold fiber taper coupled silica microsphere laser in the 2 µm wavelength region

Thulium-doped silica microsphere laser with a significantly low threshold and an output of 0.8 mW at 1.94 µm has been demonstrated using a microsphere of 75 µm diameter fabricated from 1.3 wt% Tm-doped silica fiber.
