Theoretical analysis of bistable distributed feedback lasers with detuning effect

Static and switching characteristics of bistable distributed-feedback lasers are analyzed theoretically using a model in which the gain properties are exactly considered. The results indicate that the bistable properties are controlled by detuning the Bragg wavelength from the wavelength at which the gain is the maximum. Analysis of switching characteristics predicts that the switch-on delay and switch-off speed are enhanced by a factor of two or more through the detuning effect of the Bragg wavelength. The possibility of further improvement by p-doping and the multiple quantum-well structure is discussed.<
