A validated actuator

The concept of validation in an actuator (and also in a sensor) provides a framework within which the distribution of computing power to the level of individual process instruments can be put to use. The complexity of the overall system can be greatly reduced by allowing each instrument to carry out processing where it is most appropriate. The reliability and operation of each instrument is assessed online, so quality and safety may be continually verified. When this is combined with suitable control algorithms and the process actuator concept used to validate a cascade of loops, then a relatively simple, scalable architecture is produced.
