Bearing capacity of H-beams with corrugated webs under partial compressive loading

Firstly The calculating formulas for the strength of H-beams with corrugated webs under partial compressive edge loading are summarized. Then, ten specimens were tested to study the failure mode and the bearing capacity, together with the non-linearity finite element method. The results show that the local compressive strength of the beams with corrugated is higher than the beams with plane webs, which have the same web thickness. Moreover, less the loading distribution width is, superior the advantage will be. Observing the test phenomenon, the failure characteristic is brittle, when the loading distribution width is small, and when the width becomes large, the characteristic turn to be plastic. The finite element method can forecast the strength, failure mode and post-buckling strength effectively. Finally, the design methods are proposed according to the proportion between distribution width and the web's wavelength. By the confirming, the design formulas can effectively predict the ultimate strength under all kinds of conditions.
