A multiplexing/demultiplexing system for use with an intracortical electrode array

A multiplexer/demultiplexer VLSI chip has been designed and fabricated which is suitable for multiplexing or demultiplexing analog information to or from a neuroprosthetic electrode array. This chip, designed for use with the Utah Intracortical Electrode Array, can be used in either a stimulating or recording mode. In either mode, this prototype circuit is capable of routing signals to/from 16 electrodes, using a minimum of 5 wires. The chip utilizes solder bump pads for bonding directly to the back of the electrode array. In this paper, we discuss the design and electrical characteristics of this chip.
